Artist's Notes
“Passing by, your life is passing by purposelessly. Night and day, you listen to the Puranas but you do not understand them, o fool. Kaal has arrived, now where will you run to?”
– Guru Tegh Bahadur ji (Guru Granth Sahib, 1352)
Kaal (or Kala) means time or death. It has other meanings as well in different contexts.
In this painting, Bhagat paints a Symbol of Time and Death inspired by the compositions of Dasam Granth. It is known as Mahakala, Shri Kaal, or Kala Bhairava.
The Saints always taught us to meditate on death, because when we remember that we are mortal and that we have a limited time on earth, then this clarifies what is truly important in life.
The meditation on death is important if one wants to be prepared for their death. You cannot pretend death does not exist until the very last moment, and expect to be totally ready for it.
You must bring it into your awareness, you must remember what is truly important in life and you must do that.
