Artist's Notes
“Kabir – dying, dying, the world is dying, but no one knows how to die. Those who die in the right way, never have to die again.”
– Bhagat Kabir Ji (Guru Granth Sahib, 1365)
My painting depicts the brutality and injustice that occurred during the 1984 anti-sikh riots in Delhi.
I was not born at that time but I have relatives who experienced it first-hand. Listening to their stories sends shivers down your spine. It was a terrifying period.
Male sikhs were beaten and burned alive on the streets, with tires around their necks. Female sikhs were raped and killed.
This painting focuses on the last stand of a sikh woman who struggles against her attackers. She draws her Kirpan for self-defence but she is over-powered by two figures, with a third figure ready to beat her down.
The woman’s body maybe pulled apart but her spirit is unwavering, her focus fixates on something beyond the painting.
The painting depicts an event reminiscent of a similar event that occurred thousands of years ago. Various elements of the painting hint at this event and also hint at the irony of the riots. See if you can figure it out.
